ARW MEC Meeting Update

By Thorne Saylor, ARW MEC Vice Chairman

The ARW MEC convened its second meeting of the year last week in Appleton, Wisconsin. The MEC Officers, as well every standing committee chairman, were up for re-election, amongst many other items of business. Following the MEC and LEC Officer reports, the MEC voted unanimously to re-elect Captain Chris Suhs as your MEC Chairman, Captain Thorne Saylor as your MEC Vice-Chairman, and Captain Graham Hoff-Downing as your MEC Secretary Treasurer for an additional two-year term. All of the current committee chairmen were re-elected as well, with the only change being that of the Hotel Committee Chairman. LGA Captain Andrew Payne was elected to fill this important position. Andrew is currently seeking motivated volunteers to staff his committee. Interested pilots should send an email expressing their desire to volunteer for the Hotel Committee to thorne.saylor@alpa.org.

Immediately after the elections, the MEC heard a number of briefs from key committees, including Negotiations, Grievance, Training and Testing, Hotels, and a brief on ALPAÕs national strategic plan by Delta Air Lines Captain Roger White. For those of you who would like to review the plan it can be found at  www.alpa.org/strategicplan.

The next day, the MEC was back in session with more briefings on the recently conducted negotiations telephone poll, a national SPSC briefing, and an ALPA strategic policy discussion led by ALPA attorneys Marcus Migliore and Andrew Shostack. The afternoon consisted of a strategic policy discussion and a Sunrise/Sunset campaign update. A visit from Air Wisconsin AirlineÕs senior leadership group was next on the agenda, followed by a robust question and answer session.

Wednesday morning, the MEC concluded a few remaining items of business, then adjourned the meeting to host a burger and brat picnic for all Air Wisconsin employees.

Negotiating Committee Member Wanted!

By the ARW MEC

In anticipation of continued volunteer turnover on the Negotiating Committee the ARW MEC has voted to add an additional member to the committee. The MEC believes that in order to effectively represent the pilot group as we continue to work towards a new TA, it is necessary to begin preparing for volunteer turnover and also any other unforeseen challenges the MEC and the committee may face in the months to come.

Prospective Negotiating Committee applicants should be thoroughly familiar with our current CBA, the rejected Tentative Agreement and the ALPA MEC and committee structure.  Participation in preparation and bargaining sessions with the company, and an open mind and willingness to contribute to the greater good of the pilot group is essential.  Previous ALPA committee experience is desirable.

Please provide a one-page letter detailing your background and experience pertinent to becoming a Negotiating Committee member, and why you want to participate to:  ARWnegotiating@alpa.org. Applications will be accepted July 1 through July 15 with a decision shortly thereafter.

As we move into our 7th year of negotiating, it is obvious this is a serious commitment to the betterment of the lives and careers of the Air Wisconsin Pilots.  We ask that you take this commitment seriously while preparing to serve your fellow pilots.  Remember, itÕs the pilot groupÕs contract and your future.

All-Reserve Conference Call

By the ARW MEC

Your ARW ALPA Scheduling Committee Chairman Abdullah Bawagad will host two all-reserve pilot conference calls in July. The MEC Officers, along with ALPA Labor Relations Counsel Jody Bettenburg, will join the call to support the Scheduling Committee in answering any of your questions.

Yesterday each reserve pilot should have received an email detailing the dates and times for each call along with the dial-in information.  If you are on reserve and have not received the formal invitation, please make sure your email address is on file with the Association and advise either the scheduling chairman or the ARWMEC Officers you didnÕt receive the email. Also, if you have been recently awarded Captain Reserve, please advise us and we will get you the details for the call.

Participation in the All-Reserve conference call will help ensure that you stay current on the latest issues affecting reserve pilots and provide an opportunity to speak directly with your union leaders, ask questions, and openly discuss issues specific to the life of a reservist - including contractual provisions, FAR 117, the FOM, professional conduct, and reserve quality of life.

ARW MEC Volunteer of the Quarter

By the ARW MEC Officers

Every quarter, the MEC Officers select an outstanding member of the volunteer group for special recognition. The officers choose an ARW ALPA volunteer who has distinguished him or herself and brought exceptional time and effort to bear on our pilot groupÕs behalf.  For this quarter, ORF Captain Joe Cetrone was selected as the standout volunteer to receive this award.

Joe serves on our Jumpseat/Security Committee as the Committee Chairman and invests a considerable amount of his personal time and effort on behalf of the Air Wisconsin pilot group and ALPA.

Joe is from Foxboro, Massachusetts, and is a graduate of Bridgewater State University. He was employed as a flight instructor in the Boston area by King Aviation, and was a pilot at Cape Air before joining the Air Wisconsin team in January 2012.

Please congratulate Joe and thank him for his volunteer service when you see him out on the line!

Happy 4th of July!

By the ARW MEC

The entire MEC wishes the pilot group a happy, restful, and safe 4th of July holiday weekend. As we celebrate the 240th anniversary of our great country, be sure to enjoy yourself responsibly but also take a moment to appreciate all the hard work and sacrifice that has taken place over the decades to secure our freedoms. A special thank you to those of you who are working this weekend Š we appreciate everything you do.
